The Best Christmas Lights in Kansas City
Kansas City has the single most famous light display in the Midwest: the Country Club Plaza Lights, which outline the Plaza’s rooflines and towers from Thanksgiving night through mid-January and cost nothing to drive past. Around it the metro runs deep on tradition: Christmas in the Park in Lee’s Summit, the Mayor’s Tree at Crown Center, the Luminary Walk at the Overland Park Arboretum. The home displays spread evenly across both sides of the state line. Below are the displays worth the drive this season, in Missouri and Kansas.

Kansas City Christmas lights: FAQ
- When do the Plaza Lights turn on?
- The Country Club Plaza Lights switch on at nightfall on Thanksgiving and burn nightly through mid-January. Most other displays in the metro run from around Thanksgiving through New Year’s, typically from dusk (about 5pm) until 10pm.
- Which Kansas City Christmas lights are free?
- The Plaza Lights, Christmas in the Park in Lee’s Summit, the Crown Center tree, the Legends and Zona Rosa displays, and every home display and decorated street. Union Station Holiday Reflections, Powell Gardens, the Overland Park Luminary Walk, and the drive-thru shows are ticketed.
- What are the synchronized “dancing lights” homes?
- Homes on both sides of the state line program their lights to music broadcast on a low-power FM channel. Park out front, tune your car radio to the station posted at the display, and watch from the car. Several collect charity donations.
- How should I visit a private home display?
- Keep music low, leave driveways clear, and watch for kids crossing between cars. These streets are narrow and the neighbors put up with weeks of slow traffic, so move along once you have seen the show.
